Welcome to Swenson Family Orthodontics, serving Lewiston, Idaho, the broader Lewiston-Clarkston Valley, and surrounding communities! We believe an informed patient is a confident patient. Below, you'll find answers to commonly asked questions about your orthodontic journey with Dr. Brendon Swenson and our dedicated team.
Following the guidance of the American Association of Orthodontists, we recommend that all children have their initial orthodontic evaluation around the age of 7 years old. This allows Dr. Swenson to assess their dental development and identify any potential issues early on.
The ideal age for starting orthodontic treatment varies for every child. Some issues, like cross-bites or crowded teeth, are most effectively addressed while the jawbones are still developing. Early intervention can significantly simplify treatment and improve outcomes.
However, other orthodontic concerns are best treated after all permanent teeth have erupted. At Swenson Family Orthodontics, Dr. Brendon Swenson conducts a thorough assessment of each patient, creating a customized treatment plan that aligns with their unique developmental needs and ensures the most efficient and effective results.
No, a referral from a dentist is not required to schedule an appointment with us. While approximately half of our patients are referred by their dentists, we welcome anyone who feels they or their child may benefit from an orthodontic evaluation. Simply schedule an initial consultation with our Lewiston office, and Dr. Swenson will provide a comprehensive assessment.
Since every smile and orthodontic situation is unique, the cost of orthodontic treatment is personalized for each patient. During your complimentary initial consultation, Dr. Brendon Swenson will thoroughly discuss your customized treatment plan and its associated costs, providing you with all the necessary information to budget for your orthodontic care. We strive for transparency and clear communication regarding all financial aspects of your braces or Invisalign journey.
Yes, we do! Navigating orthodontic insurance coverage can sometimes be complex, as policies vary significantly between providers. Our experienced financial coordinators will research your specific insurance plan to determine the extent of your coverage for orthodontic treatment. For your convenience, they will also file all necessary insurance claims on your behalf, working to ensure you receive the maximum possible benefits.
Generally speaking, orthodontic treatment itself is not painful. However, it's very common to experience some soreness in your teeth and jaw after the initial placement of braces or Invisalign aligners, and following adjustments. Most patients find that over-the-counter pain relievers, like ibuprofen, and sticking to soft, easy-to-chew foods help manage any discomfort effectively.
The duration of orthodontic treatment is highly individualized and depends on your unique circumstances and the specific issues being corrected. While some cases may be resolved in just a few months, others might require several years of treatment. During your consultation, Dr. Brendon Swenson will provide you with an estimated treatment timeline based on your specific needs, whether you're considering braces or Invisalign.
It is not always necessary for parents to accompany their children to every orthodontic visit at Swenson Family Orthodontics. We understand busy schedules! Rest assured, we will always contact you promptly if there are any important updates or discussions required regarding your child's orthodontic treatment.
When undergoing orthodontic treatment with braces, adjusting your diet is essential to protect your appliance and ensure smooth progress. You should strictly avoid all hard, crunchy, and sticky foods, as well as anything that requires tearing with your teeth. This includes items like gum, hard candy, sticky candy, popcorn, ice, thick tortilla chips, nuts, hard breads, and pizza crusts. We also recommend limiting soda.
On the positive side, you can still enjoy a wide variety of delicious foods! Feel free to indulge in chocolate, dairy products, soft breads and tortillas, pasta, most cooked meats and poultry, seafood, soft cooked vegetables, fruits (cut into small, bite-sized pieces), ice cream, and marshmallows. Generally, if a food is soft, easy to chew, and not hard or crunchy, it's likely safe for your braces.
Preparing for your braces or Invisalign journey with Dr. Swenson involves a few key steps. This may include a comprehensive oral exam, X-rays, and possibly plaster models of your teeth. In some cases, a tooth extraction might be recommended.
On the day of your treatment, we encourage you to come with a positive attitude! You might even want to bring a book or some music to help pass the time during the placement of your braces. You'll also have the exciting opportunity to choose the color of your braces, so be prepared to make that decision! Before your appointment, it's a good idea to stock up on some essentials: dental wax, over-the-counter pain relievers, and a selection of soft foods that will be gentle on your new orthodontic appliances during the first few days.
